Arcane Crafter

Return to Prestige Classes

Some wizards strive for adventure, some strive for understanding of the mysterious or unknown, some fight for noble or diabolical causes, and some are just greedy.  The Arcane Crafter typically falls into the last category.  Although it is true that some noble wizards have taken up the cause of creating items that can be used against evil simply for the sake of the good races of Habololy, the majority of Arcane Crafters only see gold as a reward for their efforts.

Magic crafting has been one of the most lucrative businesses on Habololy since its advent 1500 years ago.   The most successful entrepreneur of magic crafting was Tom “Magikowner”, whose descendants have carried on the family business and name for nearly a millennium.  He and his family are credited with designing the methods and studies needed to become an Arcane Crafter.  Their shop is located in Cape Tolya, in the Kingdom of Icefia, and has remained unchanged for almost the entire duration of the family.

It took many years and a great deal of money to get the Magikowners to divulge the secrets of magic crafting.  When they did, every magic-using nation made sure that they had at least one Arcane Crafter in their employ.  Arcane Crafters are credited with the creation of over half of Habololy’s magical items.

Arcane Crafters are more often found among lawful and neutral races, as it is a repetitive and time-consuming profession.  Wizards make up the vast majority of Arcane Crafters.  Humans are the most commonly found race among their ranks.

Class Features

  • Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Arcane Crafter receives no additional proficiencies.  Further, he loses any proficiency in any weapon that is

    not a simple weapon.
  • Incompetent Combatant: The Arcane Crafter gives no thought or time to combat. Because of this, he has several problems. He may never take a Weapon Focus or Weapon Proficiency feat. He receives a -2 penalty to Initiative. He takes a -4 penalty to all Concentration skill checks when in a combat situation. He has a -2 penalty to physical attack rolls.

  • MagicArtisan: The Arcane Crafter is so well trained and versed in item creation that he reduces the experience point cost on creating any item by 25%.  He also reduces the monetary cost by 20%, and the time spent by 10%.

  • Identifier: The Arcane Crafter is so familiar with magical items that he may make one Knowledge (Arcana) skill check at DC20 to reveal the most significant function of a magical item.  This has the same effect as if he had cast an Identify spell at his current

    spellcaster level.
  • Magic Artisan 2: This is the same as Master Artisan except that the reduction in experience point cost becomes 50%, the reduction in monetary cost becomes 40%, and the reduction in time becomes

    30%.
  • Analyzer: As the Arcane Crafter becomes more and more familiar with magical items; his ability to recognize them grows.  Every time the Arcane Crafter encounters a magical item he may make a DC 25 check, modified by his intelligence modifier and his Arcane Crafter level. Every time he successfully makes a check, the Arcane Crafter uncovers one specific ability of a particular magical item.  He may continue to make checks until he fails a check, at which point, he can no longer

    analyze that particular magical item.
  • Magic Artisan 3: This is the same as Master Artisan except that the reduction in experience point cost becomes 75%, the reduction in monetary cost becomes 60%, and the reduction in time becomes

    30%.
  • Master Artisan:  The Arcane Crafter is now so skilled at making magical items that he no longer needs to lose any experience when creating a magical item.  However, this route is very tiring.  Whenever the Arcane Crafter chooses to forgo any experience point loss while creating a magical item, he may not use another item creation feat for one

    week.
